At the base of Stone Arch Bridge, on the banks of the Mississippi River, you can see several layers of Minneapolis history exposed. Archaeologists have been digging here since the 1980s, when several road construction projects were underway. When they found railway footings and extensive traces of the water-power and milling systems, they decided to preserve them for the public to explore. Today, interpretive signs lead from the wooden-plank section of West River Parkway down to the river and around catwalks that bring you close to the remains of the old mills.
